Key Responsibilities
• Contribute to the ongoing development of the teaching programme for 1st and 2nd year physics programming and data analysis workshops and laboratory sessions, and Physics Foundation Year. This includes identifying learning outcomes and selecting appropriate curricula; selecting teaching methods, resources and reading, determining, designing and producing study material; planning course delivery and planning for contingencies. • Deliver 1st and 2nd year programming and data analysis workshops and laboratory sessions, physics teaching for the Science and Engineering Foundation Year, and other teaching sessions such as lectures and tutorials as appropriate. This includes preparing teaching material, communicating subject matter (including via our VLE Blackboard), and encouraging critical discourse, observing and reacting to student interventions, responding to questions outside class times and to contingencies in course delivery. • Carry out assessment which includes setting exams and coursework, marking exams and coursework, ensuring adequate moderation, providing written/oral feedback; judging whether student circumstances should be taken into consideration in the assessment; and collating and providing final assessments. • Undertake course evaluation, including facilitating student feedback; reflecting on own teaching design and delivery; implementing ideas for improving own performance. • Carry out pastoral role for undergraduate physics students and students on the Foundation Year, and if necessary refer them to the appropriate authority for guidance. • Work actively to enhance the student experience by (amongst others) delivering prompt feedback. • Participate actively in the intellectual life of the Department, including reading groups, visiting speaker seminars and/or exchanging and sharing work with colleagues. • Liaise with the cross disciplinary Foundation Year administration/ executive. • Report to module leaders, and in turn to the Head of Department. • Plan and prioritise own daily work. • Promote the principles of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in all aspects of your work.
Essential Requirements
-Have a good honours degree (or equivalent experience) in Physics. -Working knowledge of Python programming language and experience of application to scientific analysis. -Proven teaching ability, ideally with a teaching qualification. -Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, report writing skills, and experience of delivering presentations. -Ability to deliver timely, informative and personalised feedback on student assignments. -Ability to assess and organise resources, and plan and progress work activities. -Experience of adapting own skills to new circumstances. -Excellent organisational skills and the ability to undertake some administrative duties. -Proven ability to work to and meet deadlines. -Evidence of working practices that align with good practice with respect to Equality, Diversity & Inclusion and positive wellbeing.
