Key Responsibilities
● Deliver lecture/practical modules. Includes preparing teaching material, communicating subject matter and encouraging critical discourse to develop rational thinking; observing and reacting to student interventions; responding to questions outside class times, and contributing to contingencies in course delivery. ● Coordinate and teach Level 1 and Level 2 practicals ● Supervise undergraduate projects, literature reviews and tutorial groups. ● Undertake assessment for courses which may include designing assessments; marking work; ensuring adequate moderation; providing written and oral feedback and collating and providing final student assessments. ● Undertake course evaluation, including facilitating student feedback, reflecting on own teaching design and delivery; and implementing ideas for improving own performance. ● Work actively to enhance the student experience by (amongst others) delivering prompt feedback. ● Be available and attend to students’ pastoral needs. ● Respond appropriately, promptly, and proactively to requests and issues relating to teaching, supervising students, pastoral support and administrative tasks, ● Participate actively in the intellectual life of the school, including reading groups, visiting speaker seminars and/or exchanging and sharing work with colleagues. ● Depending on area of work, be responsible for conducting risk assessments and ensuring that health and safety precautions are adhered to. ● Teaching-related and administrative work is allocated by the Director of the School of Biosciences, the Director of Teaching and various committees; you will also self-generate work through innovation in teaching and administration. ● Plan and prioritise own daily work and deal reactively with requests daily. ● Self-generate work through pursuits relevant to the post, including participation in workshops and conferences to keep abreast of the latest developments in learning and teaching relevant to the faculty and/or learning and teaching related scholarship activities. ● Provide day to day support and guidance to Graduate Teaching Assistants.
Essential Requirements
-Have a good honours degree and a PhD in a relevant subject area of Biomedical Science (or equivalent experience). -Demonstrable excellence in teaching at undergraduate level. -Experience of teaching Developmental Biology and/or Molecular Cell Biology to an exceptionally high standard. -Ability to teach practical skills to large classes (80-100 students). -Ability to teach small group tutorials. -Experience of providing pastoral support to students. - Ability to ensure that all students are actively engaged in the learning process. -Ability to respond promptly, positively and informatively to student questions and queries and to deliver timely, constructive and personalised feedback on student assignments. -Effective interpersonal skills to liaise with student and staff -Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, report writing skills, experience of delivering presentations; communicating to staff at all levels of the organisation. -Excellent organisational and interpersonal skills, including experience of organising teaching load. - Ability to analyse and solve problems with an appreciation of longer-term implications. -Ability to assess and organise resources, and plan and progress work activities. -Flexibility and ability to work as part of a team.
